MARCH 2011 ISSUE

Upside Down Regatta
Kids Run Race Committee and Parents Race!
What are the "I" and "Z" flags again? What about that starting sequence? The Upside Down Regatta is taking shape. RRYC Junior Sailors interested in learning the basics of Race Committee management (hint hint this will really help them understand the rules) will have an opportunity to plan a regatta and run race committee for it. Participants will work with US Sailing certified instructors to plan out the regatta, produce regatta documents such as the Sailing Instructions and Notice of Race, and organize and operate a race committee aboard the Nancy Jayne. Parents will race Optis and Sunfish around a triangle course on Carter's Creek while the junior sailors run RC. The regatta is scheduled for Sunday April 17th. Please email Bo Bragg if your junior sailor is interested in this event or if you are willing to race or volunteer at the event. This is an excellent opportunity to learn the fundamentals of racing and race management before the regatta season arrives. We have a limited availability for this event so contact Bo soon.

Update on Fundraising
The Marshall Orr Challenge was a great success and the RRYC Junior Sailing Program wishes to thank Marshall Orr, Tommy & Brenda Asch and Joe Sarnowski for their generous participation.  Their donations jump started our 2011 program to purchase new optis for the club.  RRYC already purchased one Opti in February and hopes to buy one or two more before the sailing season begins.  We still have some fundraising work to do in order to meet our goal of procuring six boats this year so please contact Bo Bragg or Scott Vail if you are interested in giving to the program.

Special thanks to Ron Mihills and Tripp Bugg on their efforts to form A 501 (C) 3 foundation known as the RRYC Junior Sailing Foundation.  Thanks again to our early donors and make sure you say thank you when you see them out on the water this spring!

Murphy's Rules of Racing
Calling all parents, calling all parents!  An excellent racing rules seminar is going to be conducted by John and Lin McCarthy of Southern Bay Racing News You Can Use (SBRNYCU) on Saturday March 26th at RRYC.  John McCarthy does an excellent job at these seminars.  He is entertaining and informative.  Many of you junior parents are racers yourselves so take this opportunity to learn more about the Racing Rules of Sailing at this great event.  Space is filling up so
sign up now.  It's only $20 and it includes morning refreshments, lunch and all clinic materials.  I think 10 spots may be left and then there will be a waiting list.
