The 2012  CBYRA Junior Sailing Calendar was posted recently.  The JDC (Junior Division Committee) meets at AYC on January 7th to finalize the dates.  The calendar will then be finalized shortly thereafter.

This is a great tool for planning your junior sailing season.  It is filled with details on junior sailing events up and down the bay including our own here at RRYC.  There is also a CBYRA Junior FaceBook Page you can check out.

Boyd Bragg is RRYC Junior Sailor of the Year
Posted December 1st, 2011

Boyd Bragg won RRYC's Mary Parker Mocure Vaden Junior Sailor of the Year Award at RRYC's Annual Meeting in December.

Burwell Vaden established a special Junior Sailing Award in memory of his wife Polly Vaden, who died June 26, 1999. The award includes a permanent trophy to be kept at RRYC. The trophy is engraved with the name of the junior sailor who best meets the criteria for the award, and is presented at the RRYC annual meeting in November. The recipient also receives an engraved award to keep.

Criteria for the award are sportsmanship, leadership, and participation, as well as proficiency in sailing classes, races, and other related sailing events. Helping children reach their full potential was a goal actively pursued by Polly, and this award in her memory is a meaningful way for us to remember her and the ideals she espoused.

USODA Atlantic Coast Championship a Bust
Posted September 29th, 2011

Just waiting on the wind.  Waiting and waiting and...
It started raining on Friday morning as we made our way up 301 towards the Baltimore County Sailing Center for the ACC's and it didn't stop raining until late that evening. Boyd Bragg from RRYC was fired up about his first USODA event as a white fleeter and the chance to Team Trial Qualify (TTQ) for the USODA National Team in the spring of 2012 but he wasn't going to get the chance. Not this time.

Waiting on the wind. Waiting and waiting and waiting.

Boyd signed up with Team Opti Prime and Coach Spencer Wiberley from McLaughlin Boat Works. Everything was in place except the weather. The rain finally stopped after massive flooding all over Baltimore. When we arrived at the sailing center Saturday morning, the whole venue was a massive mud pit and the wind never came. We waited for hours and Team Prime played "mud ball" to kill the time but finally RC called it for the day. Back to the hotel, a good dinner out on the town and off to bed. The next day? More mud and this time lots of mosquitoes. Did the wind come? Sadly no. We waited out on the water with over 200 other sailors looking for signs but they never came. We didn't get off a single race. Despite all of the great planning by the USODA and BCSC, we ended up packing Boyd's Opti and heading home. It just wasn't meant to be. Just goes to show you that all the planning in the world just doesn't matter if Mother Nature isn't in the mood to sail. Next USODA event? Southeast Regionals on Marco Island, Florida.

Daniel Resio #1 at Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge
RRYC's own Daniel Resio took first place in the 2011 Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge and Dinghy Distance Race on Saturday September 24th.  Daniel beat out 16 other boats in his recreational division to take the top prize.  Did we mention that there was only one other junior in the class?  That's right.  Daniel beat 15 other adults and one junior racer on his way to the podium.  Maybe it's just me but some of those guys standing behind him look a little shell shocked. Complete results can be found here.

Daniel has been a terror on the sunfish course during the spring and fall series at RRYC this year but this has by far been his greatest sailing accomplishment and we are all very proud of him.  Congratulations Daniel!

RRYC 2011 Fall Junior Race Series Concludes
Posted October 9, 2011

The RRYC Fall Series wrapped up on Sunday October 2nd after three separate days of racing over the course of September and October.  While the first two days consisted of mediocre wind, the last day allowed for excellent racing all day.  The wind was consitently over 10 knots in Carter's Creek with gusts over 15.

A windward leward course was raced as well as a triangle course.  There were a few capsizes during the day but the water was still and most of the racers kept racing throughout the day.  One even went in for a warm shower and then came back out to the course.

After scoring eight races and throwing out one, the finall tally resulted in Boyd Bragg finishing first in the Optimist Division with John Vail in second and Alex Resio in third.  For the Sunfish fleet it was Daniel Resio in first, Taylor Sommers in second, and Billy Hatch in third.

The RRYC Junior Sailing Program ramps back up in the spring of 2012.  In the meantime, contact Bo Bragg at 804.436.7337 with any questions.
