Junior Sailing Program 2012
Posted January 20, 2012
by Arabella Denvir

As our Young Sailors become teenagers we have to work hard to keep them in the fold and make sure that sailing becomes even more fun for them!

The 2012 season will include more emphasis on adventure and fun, particularly the early June session.   The July Race Training Course will, on the other hand, be intensive Race Training.   And the August session will be for our wonderful sailing babies and other  beginners.   And we introduce J24 sailing to RRYC teenagers for the first time.

SESSION 1: RRYC Adventure Sailing Week
– Intermediate level    June 4-8
Now that you can sail with some confidence let’s have some fun using your sailing skills.  During this week you will plan and make some voyages, some sailaway days.   You will learn how to use VHF radios, how to beach and raft up, how to use all relevant safety equipment, and we will have on the water games.  And possibly how to row your boat!

SESSION 2: RRYC Race Training Week   July 16-20
My favourite course to teach each year!  This year it will be a five day course, leading to the RRYC Junior Regatta on Saturday 21st.   This year we will include some team racing.  Team racing improves your boat handling skills and your knowledge of the rules amazingly.  Race training will include boat speed, boat preparation, racing rules, racing tactics, mark rounding, starting strategies and will take place at RRYC and at Premier Sailing at The Tides, and will culminate in the RRYC Junior Regatta on Saturday.

SESSION 3: RRYC August Training Week   August 6-10
This course is ideal for beginners  and also for families looking for sailing dates later in the summer. From age 6 upwards.   Optimists and sunfish.

J24 Teenager courses:  Take the next step and learn to sail a J24, to handle a jib and fly a spinnaker.  For age 14 and  over with maximum group size of 4 students in each J24. Available on several dates throughout the summer .
Please phone Arabella at Premier Sailing School to book your course on 804 438 9300

Hannah Richardson is an accomplished sailor at RRYC.  She excels in the Sunfish, Typhoon, and Flying Scot classes.  Now she is aiming to break more hearts within the Laser class after acquiring Hull # 177329.  Good luck Hannah!

2012 CBYRA Junior Calendar Posted (tentative)
Posted December 19th, 2011
The 2012  CBYRA Junior Sailing Calendar was posted recently.  The JDC (Junior Division Committee) meets at AYC on January 7th to finalize the dates.  The calendar will then be finalized shortly thereafter.

This is a great tool for planning your junior sailing season.  It is filled with details on junior sailing events up and down the bay including our own here at RRYC.  There is also a CBYRA Junior FaceBook Page you can check out.

Boyd Bragg is RRYC Junior Sailor of the Year
Posted December 1st, 2011

Boyd Bragg won RRYC's Mary Parker Mocure Vaden Junior Sailor of the Year Award at RRYC's Annual Meeting in December.

Burwell Vaden established a special Junior Sailing Award in memory of his wife Polly Vaden, who died June 26, 1999. The award includes a permanent trophy to be kept at RRYC. The trophy is engraved with the name of the junior sailor who best meets the criteria for the award, and is presented at the RRYC annual meeting in November. The recipient also receives an engraved award to keep.

Criteria for the award are sportsmanship, leadership, and participation, as well as proficiency in sailing classes, races, and other related sailing events. Helping children reach their full potential was a goal actively pursued by Polly, and this award in her memory is a meaningful way for us to remember her and the ideals she espoused.
