Boyd Bragg is RRYC 2012 Junior Sailor of the Year
Posted December 1st, 2012

Boyd Bragg won RRYC's Mary Parker Mocure Vaden Junior Sailor of the Year Award at RRYC's Annual Meeting in December.

Burwell Vaden established a special Junior Sailing Award in memory of his wife Polly Vaden, who died June 26, 1999. The award includes a permanent trophy to be kept at RRYC. The trophy is engraved with the name of the junior sailor who best meets the criteria for the award, and is presented at the RRYC annual meeting in November. The recipient also receives an engraved award to keep.

Criteria for the award are sportsmanship, leadership, and participation, as well as proficiency in sailing classes, races, and other related sailing events. Helping children reach their full potential was a goal actively pursued by Polly, and this award in her memory is a meaningful way for us to remember her and the ideals she espoused.

Boyd will be campaigning for the USODA National Team this year.  He qualified to try out for the team in April of 2013 at Peawaukee Yacht Club in Wisconsin.  Details can be found at http://www.teamtrials2013.com.

Summer Youth Racing Highlights

September 1, 2012

It was a busy summer for several of our RRYC junior sailors who travelled the Bay and abroad to race.  Here are some of the highlights from their summer season.

Boyd Bragg raced in almost every CBYRA junior event over the course of the summer and was recently extended an invitation to the 2012 Hospice Cup Invitational Team Race in Annapolis.  Each year the Top 20 CBYRA High Point Optimist sailors are extended an invitation to this regatta.  They are divided into four groups of five and race in a team format for this event.

Boyd raced in twelve CBYRA regattas over the summer and wrapped up the season with a fourth place finish in his fleet at the Maryland State Championship at Tred Avon.  Boyd also raced in two USODA (U.S. Optimist Dinghy Association) events during the summer.  He raced in the U.S. National Championship over four days in Sandusky, OH.  Over three hundred sailors participated and Boyd Team Trial Qualified (TTQ) at this event.  This means that Boyd will receive an invitation to try out for the U.S. National Team this spring at Peawaukee Yacht Club in Wisconsin.  Boyd also raced in the USODA New England Regional Championship in Newport, RI in August where over 300 sailors participated.

While her brother was racing his Opti around the country this summer, Reese Bragg took the opportunity to get her feet wet racing as well.  Reese raced her Opti "Reese's Cup"  in several green fleet divisions on the Bay as well at the Opti Nationals in Sandusky, OH.

Alex Resio also kept busy in his Opti this summer racing in four events on the Bay.  Alex participated in the Virginia State Championship at FBYC, the ICYCC Junior Regatta, RRYC's Junior Regatta and the FBYC Annual One Design.  He did very well in all of the regattas and placed in two of them.  Alex took 3rd in the ICYCC Junior Regatta and 2nd in the FBYC AOD.

Daniel Resio used the summer to continue on his Sunfish racing campaign.  He made the decision to try to get to a higher level of competition this year.  He started at the Mid-Atlantic Sunfish Regional where he finished first in his division.  He then went to the North American Sunfish Championship on Lake Michigan for 6 straight days of racing.  The first 3 days were for the youth portion and Daniel finished 8th overall and 4th in his age division.  The next 3 days were spent racing in the open division where he placed 60th out of 80 boats which included the former North American and World Champion as well as 3 former Olympians.  Besides the overall high level of competition at this event, the conditions that he sailed in were fairly extreme compared to our Rappahannock River.  They raced in 18-22 knots several days and the waves were over 4 foot (up to 6).  Several adults abandoned the race but Daniel persevered and finished out the regatta.  Daniel recently received his official invite to the 2012 Sunfish Worlds which are in St. Petersburg, FL this October.  Details on the Sunfish Youth World Regatta can be found at http://www.sunfishclass.org/worlds

John Vail also spent time on the Bay this summer racing Optis.  John finished second at the ICYCC Junior Regatta.  He also raced in the FBYC Annual One Design where he finished second place overall as well as within his fleet.

John Vail finishes 2nd overall as well as within his fleet at the FBYC Annual One Design Regatta.

I think it fair to say that all of these sailors are looking forward to racing a little closer to home when the RRYC Junior Fall Series commences on Sunday September 2nd.  All dates for the series are on the Club calendar.  Simply go to www.RRYC.com and check out the calendar link at the top of the page.  Registration forms are available on the Junior Sailing website.

USODA Southeast Regional Championship - 9/21 - 9/23

The USODA Southeast Regional Opti Championship will be held at Camp Seagull this year in North Carolina.  Check in starts on Friday September 21 with racing on Saturday and Sunday.  Boyd Bragg, John Vail, and Reese Bragg will be competing in the blue, white, and green fleets, respectively.

There is room on the Opti trailer for more participants so contact Bo at 804.436.7337 if you are interested.  Tom Coleman is going to serve as PRO for the green fleet.  He is well known as the "Green Fleet Guru" and makes for an awesome experience for younger racers.

FBYC SIDS Regatta - 9/29

If Camp Seagull is too far away for you then you might want to consider this worthwhile regatta which is the following weekend and much closer to home.  RRYC always sends a bunch of juniors to this fun fall regatta.  Let's plan on doing it again this year.  Complete details are at http://www.fbyc.net/Events/2012/09.29.onedesign/ssi.dtml
